If I didn't receive an email from a Portland radio listener, I would have blown off the Terri Schiavo story as parents who are unable to let go of their daughter. The listener voiced concern to her local public radio station for framing the story with only a "right to die" lens and ignoring other important details like the following from an AP report:

An attorney for her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, recently alleged that domestic abuse may have been the cause, an accusation vehemently denied by Michael Schiavo and his attorney, George Felos.

The Schindlers say their son-in-law is motivated by money and personal desire. They say he would inherit the remainder of a $700,000 medical trust fund awarded to his wife in a 1992 malpractice lawsuit and wants to marry another woman, with whom he had a baby girl in September.

Michael Schiavo sued the doctors who did not diagnose the potassium imbalance, and the money from the suit was supposed to pay for Terri's lifelong treatment and care. Only about $140,000 would remain after Michael Schiavo pays his lawyers, according to court documents.

Separately, Michael Schiavo received about $300,000 from the malpractice award.

Michael Schiavo once had a close relationship with his in-laws, even living in their home for two years. Bob Schindler said everything changed once the money from the malpractice suit came in February 1993; he said Michael didn't appear to be rushing to seek new treatment for Terri.

"I finally confronted him and we had a violent argument about Terri and he said he's making the decisions and whatever he decides to do, he'll do and it's none of my business," Schindler said. "It only got worse from there."

Michael Schiavo said Terri once told him that she would not want to be kept on life support. The Schindlers say Schiavo didn't mention their daughter's wishes until after he won the money.

One day, I hope to be featured in the Los Angeles Times as they welcome me home on a red carpet while I accept my Peabody Award for outstading community journalism.

What'll I WEAR?!

Last night, my dad pointed out that I didn't used to be so caught up in how I look. But this is for the Los Angeles Times!

No, I wasn't interviewed about the Crossing East project or the Queer Youth series, but rather about my TAXES. (check out the Business section on Monday, March 7)

Somewhere between my 20s and my 30s, my taste evolved from barbershop flat tops, vintage thrift store finds, and Neutrogena products to $100 cut and color, REI, and Kheil's. Maybe it's the professionalism called for at my job, maybe it's a delayed fascination with makeup. Nonetheless, I'm thankful for my dad's reminder about the "old" Robynn who was less consumed with looking "right."

California

There's a coffee shop right by my work on "crack" corner. I've been good and have had a stash of breakfast foods at work so I don't need to spend my $1.75 of a bagel with cream cheese each morning. But today, upon ordering the english muffin/ham/egg breakfast special, I was rewarded with California!

I know it's nerdy of me, but I collected pennies as a five-year old, "wheats" being the big score. Today, not only did I aquire a new state for my collection, but it's my home state: land of earthquakes, boob jobs, and DC-bound Hollywood stars. But alas, it's the place I call home.
