Driving home from Salinas with Nemo birthday cake still a log in my stomache, I heard the tail end of Latino USA. I was happy to hear a San Francisco story about the high school in my neighborhood. It´s also interesting to hear the stories that other producers piece together from the City.
It's June, and that means across the country close to three million high school seniors are donning caps and gowns and crossing auditorium stages for the official handshake and diploma. It’s a celebratory rite of passage with many looking forward to college. For thousands of high school seniors, though, crossing the stage also means an end to their educational opportunities. Students without social security numbers can enroll in public schools, but enrollment into universities is much more complex. From San Francisco, Nancy Mullane has this profile of one graduating senior committed to a college education, even without a social security number.
