I've been trying really hard to be engaged this electoral season, but I've been relying on everyone else to do the hard work so that I can just follow my trusted sources. I'd finally made up my mind to go with Edwards and then he dropped out.

I know that a lot of my friends are excited about Obama, but I didn't hear any concrete reasons why. So I decided to explore. I figured I should find out what the people in Chicago and Illinois say about him.

And in my search, I was reminded that I first heard of him when he gave the speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. After watching that speech, I was sold.

Web popularity can bring out the idiots. My friends are finding that with the smattering of racist responses to their totally amazing music video.

But Favianna places these kinds of comments into a larger context about the invisibility of people of color on the web.

Hearing Voices: Movement Soul

In prepping for a panel I'm moderating about the state of activism today, I found an old wish list item: Movement Soul, a collection of live recordings from the civil rights movement.

Unfortunately, it's no longer available for sale, but I did find an amazing documentary that integrates the voices and music from the peak of the movement produced by Barrett Golding of Hearing Voices.

I plan to play a clip from this along with some of my archival tape from Mark Izu, Miya Masaoka, and Bill Sorro on Tuesday as I ask how music integrates with the movement today.

(On a side note, this morning NPR devoted a whole 13 minutes to a segment on gospel music and its importance to the Civil Rights Movement!)

 

Sneaking Politics into the Mainstream

I'm not a Chumbawamba fan, but I've heard that they've had roots in the anarchist community. Thankfully, they've used their success to refocus their celebrity spotlight. Here's a video of them on Letterman where they add a chant "Free Mumia Abu Jamal" into the chorus of their fraternity pop song.

Tiger Victims Criminalized

What is going on here?! I don't care if they taunted the tiger. No one should be at risk of being chewed up by a tiger while at the zoo!

My friend, a former zoo employee, has first hand knowledge of the stupidity of the general public. Shoot, even I taunted the monkeys (or were they apes) while on an honor's field trip to the zoo in sixth grade, just because we heard that it would get them to throw shit at us. It worked.

I'm disgusted at how several media outlets report on their criminal record. Even if they beat up a cop in the past or smoked pot before they came into the zoo, they shouldn't get attacked by a tiger!

My hero, David Zirin, wrote about how the media were quick to criminalize Redskin Sean Taylor, saying he "had bad judgment."

How different would the coverage be if my group of honors students, comprised mostly of whites and East Asians, had been mauled instead of South Asians and a Latino?
